Heritage Day 2019
May 4th – 10 am to 6 pm
HERITAGE DAY FESTIVAL FROM THE BEGINNING
Twelve years ago, at a local restaurant on East Sam Rayburn Drive, Roy Floyd, Spanky Carter, Judy Teller, and a local restaurant owner begin to plan a festival that would showcase the local people, the history of Fannin County and build memories of the community for years to come. The festival has evolved through the years. The first one had a watermelon seed spitting contest, sack races and showed historical pictures gathered from citizens. The setting was a picnic on the square where people were encouraged to bring homemade ice cream and talk about events of the past.
Today we have vendors, motorcycles jumping higher than buildings, train displays, a car and truck show, motorcycle fun ride, garden tractor pulls, historical performances, food, beverages, children performing and thousands of people in attendance. The vision and perseverance of these people have brought us this wonderful annual event that is anticipated by young and old alike.
We honored the founders of this event with a presentation at the opening ceremony of the 12th Annual Heritage Day. Thank you, Roy Floyd, Spanky Carter and Judy Teller for your vision to make this event possible for all of us. May we continue to have it for many years and continue to see it grow and evolve.
The 13th Annual Heritage Day Celebration is a free celebration of our Fannin County Heritage. The Car and Truck Show, as well as the Motorcycle Fun Run, will begin to register at 8:00 am. Vendors will be in place at that time and the opening ceremony will begin at 9:00 am. with the Boy Scouts of Troup 52 presenting the flags. Then a welcome by Mayor, Roy Floyd and Fannin County Judge, Spanky Carter. Immediately after the opening, we begin a day filled with Historic Presentations, lots of musical entertainment. Dan Weeks and his motorcycle will again be jumping higher than the downtown buildings as the crowd holds its breath. Many new vehicles will be on display from Bonham Chrysler and Bob Utter Ford Lincoln Kia. Burton Gilliam, “from the movie Blazing Saddles“, will be on hand to visit with the crowd at the Bonham Chrysler area.
Vendors will be showing handmade knives, glass art, Scentsy products, massages, blacksmith creations, specialty coffee, hand-made jewelry, pick a duck and numerous civic organizations will be showcasing their organizations.
This year at 1 pm. in front of the Fannin County Museum of History on W. 1st. Street the 1966 Katy Caboose that was placed in front of the Museum in 2016 will be officially opened to the public. Directors of the Fannin County Museum of History will have a Grand Opening which will include a ribbon cutting and tours of the caboose during our Heritage Day Celebration. A miniature train exhibit will again be in Fannin County Historical Commission building at the east end of the depot on W. 1st Street.
Entertainment will be varied with BISD choirs, IW Evans Square Dancers. George and Margie will bring music with a Cajun twist. One Way Music Ministry, a five-member band from Leonard, will present gospel music. The Foreman Brothers are original songwriters from Telephone Texas. They will present their own music in a Country and Western style.
The Garden Tractor and Mini Rods Pull off will begin at 3:00 pm. in the area to the west of the Fannin County Museum of History. Check out all the action and see who has the ability to pull the heaviest load. There is no admission charge.
Join us for a day of celebration and fun for all ages.
